Diabetes or Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that
causes increased blood sugar level. This can be because of the inability of
pancreas to produce enough insulin or due to failure of the cells to respond to
the insulin produced. High blood sugar level shows symptoms of
polydipsia(increased thirst), polyphagia(increased hunger) and
polyuria(increased urination).
According to Ayurveda, diabetes is referred as Madhumeha,
Madhu means honey and Meha means urine. It is caused due aggravation of Vata.
Maximum deteriotion of body tissues(dhatus) is caused in this disease. Vata is
an ayurvedic humor characterized by dryness and wind. Impaired digestion also
causes diabetes. This leads to accumulation of digestive impurities in the
pancreas which in turn hampers the production of insulin.
