Diabetes According to Ayurveda - Dr Satyan Gujar

Diabetes or Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that causes increased blood sugar level. This can be because of the inability of pancreas to produce enough insulin or due to failure of the cells to respond to the insulin produced. High blood sugar level shows symptoms of polydipsia(increased thirst), polyphagia(increased hunger) and polyuria(increased urination).

According to Ayurveda, diabetes is referred as Madhumeha, Madhu means honey and Meha means urine. It is caused due aggravation of Vata. Maximum deteriotion of body tissues(dhatus) is caused in this disease. Vata is an ayurvedic humor characterized by dryness and wind. Impaired digestion also causes diabetes. This leads to accumulation of digestive impurities in the pancreas which in turn hampers the production of insulin.

Symptoms of Diabetes:

  •  Increased hunger
  • Frequent Urination
  • Increased Thirst
  • Tiredness and loss of energy
  • Lack of interest
  • Loss in weight
  • Slow healing of wounds

Oil Pulling - Best Way to Start Your Healthy Day with Ayurveda in Pune

Coconut Oil for Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling or Oil Swishing is traditional ancient remedy, which involves swishing of oil in the mouth. This process is also mentioned as one of the most important book of ayurveda “The Charaka Samhita ”. Charaka(Father of Medicine) born in 300 BC was the major contributor to ancient art and science of ayurveda. This method is also known as Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha in Ayurveda. According to ayurveda, oil pulling is best for both oral health and helps in treatment of several diseases like diabetes mellitus or asthma.

Oil pulling has very powerful detoxifying effects. Our mouth is home of bacteria, fungi, and other parasites. If you want a healthier life, then cleaning the mouth is very important.

What is Oil Pulling

It is a cleansing technique that consists of simple oil swishing in the mouth for few minutes a day.

Method

This process should be done before having breakfast, with empty stomach. Take one table spoon oil. It is recommended to take sunflower/sesame oil. Then swish / rinse gently in your mouth for 20 minutes. While doing so, make sure the oil reaches all corners of your mouth, but avoid swallowing of oil. As you continue this method, the oil changes its color to whitish and become thinner. This activity activates enzymes that are helpful in removing toxins from your body. After completing the process, spit the oil but don’t spit in the sink, spit it outside. Now-a-days people try it with coconut oil because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal property.

Ayurvedic Panchkarma Treatment for Diabetes in Pune - Mumbai

Diabetes, universally referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the human being has high blood glucose, either because insulin making is insufficient, or because the body's cells do not counter properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will usually experience polyuria, they will become more and more thirsty and hungry.

There are three types of diabetes:
         1) Type 1 Diabetes
The body does not generate insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early middle age. Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet.
         2) Type 2 Diabetes The body does not produce enough insulin for proper function, or the cells in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance). Around 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type. Some people may be able to control their type 2 diabetes symptoms by losing weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and monitoring their blood glucose levels. However, type 2 diabetes is typically a progressive disease - it slowly gets worse and the patient will probably end up have to take insulin, usually in tablet form. Overweight and obese people have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with a healthy body weight. People with a lot of visceral fat, also known as central obesity, belly fat, or abdominal obesity, are especially at risk. Being overweight/obese causes the body to release chemicals that can destabilize the body's cardiovascular and metabolic systems. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also greater as we get older. Experts are not completely sure why, but say that as we age we tend to put on weight and become less physically active. Men whose testosterone levels are low have been found to have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
         3) Gestational Diabetes This type affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood, and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively increasing levels of glucose. Diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made during pregnancy. The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet. Between 10% to 20% of them will need to take some kind of blood-glucose-controlling medications. Undiagnosed or uncontrolled gestational diabetes can raise the risk of complications during childbirth. The baby may be bigger than he/she should be.

Controlling Diabetes - Treatment Is Effective And Important

All types of diabetes are treatable. Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime; however, some people have managed, through a lot of exercise, diet and excellent body weight control to get rid of their symptoms without medication. Patients with type 1 are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise. Patients with Type 2 diabetes are usually treated with tablets, exercise and a special diet, but sometimes insulin injections are also required. If diabetes is not adequately controlled the patient has a significantly higher risk of developing complications.

Ayurvedic treatment

Ayurveda recommends the Panchakarma as a cleansing treatment program. The Panchakarma begins with an herbal massage and an herbal steam sauna followed by fasting to cleanse the body. This is followed by an herbal purge for the liver, pancreas and spleen and this is further followed by colon therapy which cleanses the digestive tract and reconstitutes the system. Snehana and shodhana are also the basic treatment methods which are employed dependent on the condition and body type of the patient. The Shamana treatment is given after the above mentioned treatments, and uses combinations of herbal medications.
