Heart Attack Symptoms and Causes

THE PROBLEM
Today heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Heart disease claims more life’s per year than any other chronic illness and the future holds dire news for the more chronic symptoms associated with heart disease: cholesterol, high blood pressure, hypertension, and obesity.

The increases in obesity, diabetes, and other risk factors within the younger generations have also led some to draw concern towards how we're going to care for such a future patient population.

HEART DISEASE, WHAT IT IS
Coronary Heart Disease, which is the blocking of these coronary heart arteries, the heart’s lifeline to the nutrients and oxygen it, needs to work. Artheroclosis is the main culprit as it involves a gradual hardening of the coronary arteries that provide the heart with the nutrients and energy it needs to live, and keep us alive as a result.

Atherosclerosis is a slow, complex disease in which fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery. This build-up, also known as plaque, can lead to heart attack and stroke. As Atherclsoiss develops in the inner arteries around the heart, the risk for heart attack increases as the arteries are clogged, hardened and otherwise unable to transport the necessary nutrients and oxygen the heart needs.

Of course, hypertension, which is high blood pressure which can be caused either by too much fluid in the blood vessels or by narrowing of the blood vessels plays a tremendously damaging role in the progress of heart disease. High blood pressure is usually defined as blood pressure greater than 140/90 that fails to come down regardless of your activity. When blood pressure is too high and remains that way, arterial walls become weakened and more prone to atherosclerosis (a build-up of fatty substances on the inner walls of the arteries). The heart must then work harder to try to pump oxygenated blood through the clogged arteries. The clogged arteries are also more prone to blood clots that can block the flow of blood entirely. Consistent high blood pressure causes the heart to work harder than it should and can damage the coronary arteries over the long term.

So heart disease is when our heart doesn’t get enough nutrient-rich blood. The arteries which feed the heart, the same away arteries feed other parts of the body, when they become hardened; inelastic a chronic condition can occur whereby the ability of those arteries to deliver and pump that blood is diminished. Ultimately, cutting off nutrients to various parts of the heart which if are not treated immediately can lead to death. Heart disease can become a chronic condition because often we don’t know when trouble has been developing, often over many years. The condition known as atherosclerosis causes our arteries to harden as cholesterol, fat, and other substances build up in the artery walls; blockage can result in a heart attack. If not “fixed” by surgery or medical interventions (such as bypass, angioplasty, or medication), the condition will worsen, which can lead to disability or death. Certainly a large portion of our population are in the dark as to how to empower themselves through a "balanced" diet and general know-how when it comes to allowing ourselves to rest our hearts. This is where and how Ayurveda can play a critical role in our fight against heart disease

Diabetes According to Ayurveda - Dr Satyan Gujar

Diabetes or Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that causes increased blood sugar level. This can be because of the inability of pancreas to produce enough insulin or due to failure of the cells to respond to the insulin produced. High blood sugar level shows symptoms of polydipsia(increased thirst), polyphagia(increased hunger) and polyuria(increased urination).

According to Ayurveda, diabetes is referred as Madhumeha, Madhu means honey and Meha means urine. It is caused due aggravation of Vata. Maximum deteriotion of body tissues(dhatus) is caused in this disease. Vata is an ayurvedic humor characterized by dryness and wind. Impaired digestion also causes diabetes. This leads to accumulation of digestive impurities in the pancreas which in turn hampers the production of insulin.

Symptoms of Diabetes:

  •  Increased hunger
  • Frequent Urination
  • Increased Thirst
  • Tiredness and loss of energy
  • Lack of interest
  • Loss in weight
  • Slow healing of wounds
  • Blurred vision

Oil Pulling or Oil Swishing is traditional ancient remedy, which involves swishing of oil in the mouth. This process is also mentioned as one of the most important book of ayurveda “The Charaka Samhita ”. Charaka(Father of Medicine) born in 300 BC was the major contributor to ancient art and science of ayurveda. This method is also known as Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic Panchkarma Treatment for Diabetes in Pune - Mumbai

Diabetes, universally referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the human being has high blood glucose, either because insulin making is insufficient, or because the body's cells do not counter properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will usually experience polyuria, they will become more and more thirsty and hungry.

There are three types of diabetes:
         1) Type 1 Diabetes
The body does not generate insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early middle age. Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet.
         2) Type 2 Diabetes The body does not produce enough insulin for proper function, or the cells in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance). Around 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type. Some people may be able to control their type 2 diabetes symptoms by losing weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and monitoring their blood glucose levels. However, type 2 diabetes is typically a progressive disease - it slowly gets worse and the patient will probably end up have to take insulin, usually in tablet form. Overweight and obese people have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with a healthy body weight. People with a lot of visceral fat, also known as central obesity, belly fat, or abdominal obesity, are especially at risk. Being overweight/obese causes the body to release chemicals that can destabilize the body's cardiovascular and metabolic systems. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also greater as we get older. Experts are not completely sure why, but say that as we age we tend to put on weight and become less physically active. Men whose testosterone levels are low have been found to have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
         3) Gestational Diabetes This type affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood, and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively increasing levels of glucose. Diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made during pregnancy. The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet. Between 10% to 20% of them will need to take some kind of blood-glucose-controlling medications. Undiagnosed or uncontrolled gestational diabetes can raise the risk of complications during childbirth. The baby may be bigger than he/she should be.

Controlling Diabetes - Treatment Is Effective And Important

All types of diabetes are treatable. Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime; however, some people have managed, through a lot of exercise, diet and excellent body weight control to get rid of their symptoms without medication. Patients with type 1 are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise. Patients with Type 2 diabetes are usually treated with tablets, exercise and a special diet, but sometimes insulin injections are also required. If diabetes is not adequately controlled the patient has a significantly higher risk of developing complications.

Ayurvedic treatment

Ayurveda recommends the Panchakarma as a cleansing treatment program. The Panchakarma begins with an herbal massage and an herbal steam sauna followed by fasting to cleanse the body. This is followed by an herbal purge for the liver, pancreas and spleen and this is further followed by colon therapy which cleanses the digestive tract and reconstitutes the system. Snehana and shodhana are also the basic treatment methods which are employed dependent on the condition and body type of the patient. The Shamana treatment is given after the above mentioned treatments, and uses combinations of herbal medications.
